Lagos to pull “korope” off major highways as the Lekki‑Epe Bus Reform Scheme starts Dec 8
The Lagos State Government has announced that it will remove the small commercial buses known as _korope_ from the city’s main highways as part of an accelerated push to modernise Lagos’s transport network under the Lagos Strategic Transport Master Plan ¹ ². Officials say the move is a core element of the next phase of the Lekki‑Epe Bus Reform Scheme, which is slated to begin operations on December 8 .
The reform, part of the broader Bus Reform Initiative (BRI), aims to replace informal minibus services with a regulated, high‑capacity public‑transport system. By taking the _korope_ off major routes, the government expects to streamline operations, ease traffic congestion and improve safety for commuters . The _korope_ will be reassigned to feeder and community routes to support the First‑and‑Last‑Mile bus scheme .
In the first phase, 229 medium‑ and high‑capacity buses painted in Lagos’s blue‑and‑white livery will operate on key corridors such as Ajah‑CMS (Marina)/Obalende, Ajah‑Oshodi, Ajah‑Berger and Ajah‑Iyana Ipaja, with plans to extend to Epe later . Payments will be cashless via the Cowry card, and enforcement teams will be deployed to stop cash transactions .
