Presidency Denies Forcing Opposition Politicians to Join APC

The Presidency has dismissed claims that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is pressuring opposition politicians to defect, insisting that recent defections are voluntary decisions driven by confidence in the current administration’s policies.

According to the Presidency, politicians changing parties are exercising their constitutional right to freedom of association, not acting under intimidation or coercion.

Defections Are Voluntary

Government officials say those joining the APC are motivated by what they describe as visible progress and reforms under President Bola Tinubu, not political pressure.

They argued that party switching has always been part of Nigeria’s democratic history and should not suddenly be portrayed as a threat to democracy.

No Interference With Anti-Graft Agencies

The Presidency also rejected allegations that anti-corruption agencies are being used to target opposition figures.

It maintained that agencies responsible for fighting financial crimes operate independently and carry out investigations based on evidence, not political affiliation.

According to the statement, the President does not instruct any agency on who to investigate or prosecute.

Accountability, Not Politics

The government stressed that fighting corruption requires collective responsibility and warned against turning accountability into a political tool.

It added that anyone facing investigation should address the allegations through lawful means rather than framing them as political persecution.
