AFCON 2025: Morocco Throws Stadium Open After Kick-Off As Low Attendance Embarrasses Organisers

In a desperate attempt to mask low attendances at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Moroccan hosts have resorted to throwing stadium gates open after kick-off, allowing fans to enter for free once games are underway.

A top official of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), who spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the move was sanctioned after repeated scenes of half-empty arenas across host cities during the tournament’s opening days.

On Wednesday, the Group F clash between Cameroon and Gabon in Agadir began in front of near-deserted stands, despite the stadium’s 45,000 capacity.

Under heavy rain, thousands of spectators trooped in midway through the first half — at no cost — swelling the final attendance figure to 35,200, according to organisers.

The revelation has raised questions about Morocco’s readiness as host, especially as the country eyes global credibility ahead of co-hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup with Spain and Portugal.

Critics say organisers are prioritising optics over transparency, as empty seats threaten the image of a successful continental showpiece.

Tickets for most group-stage games remain available on CAF’s official platform, starting from 100 dirhams (about ₦17,000 / R182.68).

Only a handful of fixtures — including Morocco’s matches against Mali and Zambia and two of Algeria’s games — are listed as sold out.

Despite this, the strategy of opening gates for free entry raises concerns about revenue loss, tournament integrity, and the credibility of official attendance figures going forward
