Gov. Agagu’s Former Deputy Celebrates 79th Birthday, Dumps PDP, Says Party Lacks Direction

Ambassador Omolade Oluwateru, former Deputy Governor of Ondo State under the late Governor Dr. Olusegun Agagu, on Thursday formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing a lack of direction, foresight, and internal cohesion, which he said no longer reflect the ideals upon which the party was founded.

Amb. Oluwateru, who served as Deputy Governor between 2003 and 2007, announced his decision during the celebration of his 79th birthday, organised by the Asiwaju Mandate Group (AMG) in recognition of his service to the state and Nigeria’s political landscape.

The former deputy governor, who is also a former Nigerian Ambassador, a recipient of an honorary Doctor of Science degree, and a Fellow of notable professional bodies, used the occasion to officially declare his resignation from the PDP, a party he described as one he helped pioneer.

Speaking at the event, the Director General of the Asiwaju Mandate Group, Asiwaju Olumuyiwa Asagunla, congratulated Amb. Oluwateru on behalf of the group and the Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. He described the celebrant as a man of integrity whose life and political career are worthy of emulation.

Asagunla noted that Oluwateru was known for his loyalty, cooperation, and unwavering support for his principal, the late Governor Agagu, throughout their time in government. According to him, the former deputy governor’s words were his bond, and his commitment to duty and service left lasting impressions on all who worked with him.

The group presented gifts to the celebrant on behalf of the Asiwaju Mandate Group, as well as a separate gift from the Minister of Interior, in appreciation of his contributions to public service.

In his response, Ambassador Oluwateru expressed deep appreciation to the organisers of the event and members of the Asiwaju Mandate Group (AMG) for the honour done to him. He disclosed that the celebration was originally planned for his 80th birthday next year but was brought forward by the group in recognition of his service to Ondo State and his role in shaping its political history.

Formally announcing his resignation from the PDP, Oluwateru said “I want to use this medium to announce to all of you that, starting from this moment, I have resigned my membership of the PDP. I am a founding member of the party, but the present situation of the PDP is not impressive. Therefore, in the interest of progress and effective governance, I hereby resign my membership. I will announce my next political destination very soon.”

The APC Chairman in Ondo State, Engr. Ade Adetimihin, in his address described Ambassador Oluwateru as a seasoned politician, statesman, and bridge-builder whose contributions to the political development of Ondo State remain invaluable. He saluted his courage and principled decision to resign from the PDP, describing it as timely and reflective of his commitment to progressive ideals.

According to him, Oluwateru’s decision was driven by conviction rather than convenience, adding that Oluwateru’s experience and leadership would be highly appreciated and could further strengthen the APC if he chooses to join the party, noting that it would be only natural for him to align with a serious and progressive political party like the APC.

The event was attended by leaders and stakeholders of the Asiwaju Mandate Group, including Barrister Corporal Nana Opri, State Secretary; Barrister Ade Pelemo, Director of Legal Matters; Engineer Babatunde Gbalajobi, Director of Special Duties; alongside other key state officials of the group.

Also present were notable dignitaries, including respected political leader, Chief Segun Adegoke; former APC State Chairman; Hon. Saka Yusuf, former Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development; former Special Adviser to late Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu on Public and Intergovernmental Relations, Mrs. Olubunmi Ademosun, former Commissioner; and other prominent party leaders and stakeholders.
