BEYOND NUMBERS: WHY AKOKO SOUTH EAST DESERVES IT’S TURN IN FEDERAL REPRESENTATION.
Politics, at its noblest form, should serve as an instrument of fairness, inclusion, and collective development—not a game of numerical advantage or sectional dominance. Within the Akoko South Federal Constituency, comprising Akoko South East and Akoko South West Local Governments, political representation has long tilted towards one side of the divide.
A brief look into history makes this imbalance evident. Since the creation of the federal constituency, representation has alternated only briefly between the two sister local governments. The record shows that Hon. Orimoloye from Akoko South East was the first to represent the constituency, followed by Late Hon. Joe Anota from Akoko South West. Thereafter, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, also from Akoko South West, then Hon. Babatunde Kolawole from Akoko South East. The pendulum again swung back to Hon. Ade Adeogun from Akoko South West and currently, Hon. Gboyega Adefarati equally from Akoko South West occupies the seat.
This historical pattern clearly shows that Akoko South West has had a greater share of representation over the years, leaving Akoko South East with fewer turns in the spirit of fairness and political equity.
The principle of rotational representation is not born out of sentiment but of justice and political wisdom. It ensures that every part of a constituency feels the presence and impact of governance. When representation remains concentrated in one section, the other naturally suffers political marginalization, uneven development and diminished confidence in the democratic process.
It is, therefore, both fair and timely that the next federal representative seat returns to Akoko South East.The local government is blessed with competent, visionary and credible individuals who have the intellect, experience and passion to represent the entire constituency effectively.
What is being sought is not privilege, but balance: an opportunity to restore mutual trust and strengthen the unity that binds both sister local governments together.
Let it also be emphasized that democracy goes beyond the rule of the majority; it is about ensuring that the minority has an equal stake in the system. When equity guides our politics, justice blossoms and development becomes inclusive.
As the next political cycle draws near, leaders and stakeholders across Akoko South East and Akoko South West must rise above narrow interests and uphold the spirit of fairness that has always been the foundation of our coexistence.
For unity, fairness and sustainable progress, the pendulum of representation should, by every measure of equity and justice, swing back to Akoko South East.
