The Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, has explained why he has chosen to remain monogamous, stating that peace, balance and stability are essential values he prioritises in his family life.

The revered monarch, who married Ivie Atuwatse in 2014 and is blessed with three children, made this known during an interview aired on BBC Pidgin and later circulated on social media on Friday

Speaking on expectations often placed on traditional rulers to have multiple wives, the Olu of Warri noted that his decision is driven by a strong desire to preserve harmony at home and avoid unnecessary complexity in his private life.

He said balancing royal responsibilities with family life requires deliberate choices that allow him to remain grounded.

The monarch explained that outside his public duties, he prefers a quiet and private lifestyle, spending most of his personal time indoors with his wife and children. He added that such moments of calm are important to him and would be difficult to maintain if he were responsible for more than one household.

According to him, polygamy would stretch his energy and limit the quality of attention he gives to his immediate family. He stated that he does not believe he has the grace to manage multiple families and is fully comfortable with that reality.

The Olu of Warri further disclosed that his role as a traditional ruler comes with intense demands, including frequent meetings and constant communication with top government officials. As a result, he said he cherishes every opportunity to unwind and reconnect with his family.

He concluded that spending quality time with his wife and children helps him stay focused, emotionally balanced and better prepared to carry out his responsibilities as a monarch
