HONOURABLE MINISTER OF INTERIOR DONATES CUSTOMIZED BEDDINGS TO INMATES IN ONDO STATE

In a landmark gesture towards improving inmate welfare and advancing correctional reform, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Ondo State Command, received over 850 customized fibre mattresses from the Honourable Minister of Interior, Hon. (Dr.) Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, on Tuesday, 24th February 2026.

The event, which was attended by dignitaries, Officers-in-Charge of custodial centres, and senior officers from the State Headquarters, underscored the Federal Government’s commitment to humane custody and rehabilitation within the Nigerian Correctional Service.

Representing the Honourable Minister, Babatunde Ogundare Esq., the Special Adviser to the Minister of Interior on Correctional Reforms, emphasized the Minister’s strong dedication to improving the welfare of inmates. He explained that the donation of beddings is part of a nationwide initiative aimed at enhancing living conditions in custodial facilities. He further noted that while this intervention will be extended to custodial centres across the country, Ondo State Command has been chosen as the pilot state.

In his welcome address, Controller of Corrections Charles Oyewole expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Honourable Minister for his generosity in promoting inmate welfare. He particularly commended the recent payment of fines for several inmates in Ondo State, which led to their release, calling the act life-changing. Additionally, he acknowledged the leadership of Controller of Corrections Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche MFR mni, whose visionary approach has significantly improved the service. He also extended his appreciation to the Special Adviser on Correctional Reforms for his steadfast support.

Speaking further, the Minister’s representative encouraged inmates to maintain good conduct and commit to genuine reformation, assuring them that the government would continue to introduce initiatives aimed at improving their welfare and enhancing their prospects for reintegration.

The symbolic presentation of the mattresses took place at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Akure, where inmates stood in for their counterparts across the state.

This donation marks an important milestone in the journey towards humane corrections, emphasizing the government’s commitment to transforming custodial facilities into centres of rehabilitation, dignity, and hope.
