Nigerian Police Begin Whistleblowing Policy, Ask Citizens To Expose Officers Involved In Bribery, Sexual Harassment, Fraud

Announcing the policy on Thursday, the Commission said it would no longer tolerate entrenched corruption in the recruitment process that has over the years denied qualified Nigerians opportunities to serve while enriching corrupt officials and middlemen.

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has rolled out a new whistleblowing policy designed to expose bribery, fraud, sexual exploitation, and other forms of malpractice in the recruitment of officers into the Nigeria Police Force.

According to the statement, the PSC declared: “Nigerians are now encouraged to report solicitation or acceptance of bribes in exchange for recruitment slots or preferential treatment.”

The Commission stressed that its objective was to guarantee transparency, fairness, and merit in all recruitment exercises, noting that a compromised process only produces compromised police officers.

It noted that its goal “is to uphold the principles of good governance and strenghten our national security by ensuring only the most qualified and upright candidates are enlisted,” the PSC said.

It further tied the new whistleblowing initiative to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, insisting that the credibility of the Nigeria Police Force is central to restoring security and the rule of law in the country.

“We believe that a credible, professional, and trustworthy Police Force is the cornerstone of national security and that reporting malpractices is a patriotic duty that directly contributes to a safer Nigeria,” the statement read.

The Commission listed offences Nigerians are expected to report, including: solicitation or acceptance of bribes, manipulation of recruitment results, falsification of credentials with official connivance, sexual harassment or extortion of candidates, the inclusion of “ghost” names, impersonation during screening, and any other unethical conduct.

The PSC pledged protection for whistleblowers, warning corrupt officials that the era of impunity in recruitment was over.

“All reports will be treated with utmost confidentiality. Whistle-blowers will be protected from victimisation, intimidation or retaliation as provided by relevant Nigerian laws,” the Commission stated.

It also gave out dedicated hotlines for reporting complaints — 08065265651, 08059544355, 09159329404 and 08035866677 — while urging Nigerians to include details of incidents, locations, dates, and individuals involved when making submissions.

“Every credible report will be promptly, independently and thoroughly investigated and we will take decisive disciplinary and legal action against any individual found culpable of recruitment malpractices,” the PSC assured.

Calling for citizens’ active participation, the Commission concluded: “Your courage can make the difference.”
