World Cup chaos: US slaps $15k visa charges on fans and players from five African nations
A major issue has come up before the 2026 World Cup as the United States begins enforcing a ‘Visa Bond Pilot Program’ that makes certain visitors pay a refundable deposit of up to $15,000 to enter the country.
The policy mainly applies to tourist and business visa applicants, but it has become a major concern for the 2026 World Cup since five qualified national teams come from countries on the restricted list.
According to The Athletic, the rule currently offers no exemptions for professional athletes, meaning players and coaches from Algeria, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, Senegal, and Tunisia could be required to pay thousands of dollars just to compete in the tournament
Although the money is returned once travelers leave on time, the cost and paperwork have caused concern.
The regulation treats football stars the same as ordinary tourists, which could complicate team travel between host cities in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
FIFA is now in talks with U.S. officials, pushing for a waiver that would cover official delegations and protect the fairness of the competition.
But while a solution for players seems possible, fans from the affected countries are unlikely to get the same exemption.
That has raised fears that the World Cup’s usual lively and diverse atmosphere could be weakened by the high entry costs.
