Oyo 2027: Seyi Makinde Moves To Handpick Successor

Seyi Makinde has begun strategic moves toward determining his successor ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Oyo State.

We reported that the governor disclosed this in his April 2026 newsletter titled “The Business of Governance,” noting that consultations with key stakeholders are already underway as part of a structured transition plan.

The governor explained that the process is aimed at ensuring continuity of his administration’s achievements while setting a clear direction for the state’s future. He added that the outcome of the consultations would be unveiled at an appropriate time.

In an earlier development on March 21, 2026, Makinde constituted an advisory council to engage governorship aspirants within the Peoples Democratic Party. The council, chaired by Bolaji Ayorinde, was mandated to interface with the aspirants and recommend a candidate capable of advancing the administration’s agenda under the “Omituntun 3.0” initiative.

The initiative was designed to provide a level playing field for all aspirants to present their visions and policy proposals. Among those who have indicated interest in the race are Adedeji Olajide, Nureni Adeniran, Bimbo Adekanmbi, Debo Akande, and Adebo Ogundoyin, among others.

Makinde noted that residents are keenly observing the unfolding political process as the transition period approaches, with growing anticipation over the direction of leadership in the state. While no specific date has been announced for unveiling the preferred candidate, the governor had earlier hinted that the party’s flagbearer may emerge through a consensus arrangement expected around April 8.
