- FG unveils africa’s first zinc-biofortified rice
The Federal Government has unveiled Africa’s first zinc-biofortified rice varieties, Faro 71 and Faro 72, at the National Cereals Research Institute in Badeggi.
The Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, led the unveiling, describing it as a significant milestone in advancing Nigeria’s agricultural and nutritional goals.
The initiative aligns with the #RenewedHope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, particularly in achieving food and nutritional sovereignty.
According to the minister, the introduction of zinc-biofortified rice is expected to improve dietary quality and address micronutrient deficiencies among Nigerians, while boosting local rice production.
The development marks a major step toward fulfilling the administration’s campaign promise of ensuring sustainable food security and improved nutrition across the country.
