IGP Disu Orders Police To Stop Illegal Detention, Shabby Dressing, ATM Extortion, Wearing Of Beards, Others

According to police wireless message, the directive prohibits extortion, misconduct, and other unethical practices by officers, in line with orders credited to the Inspector-General of Police.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Tunji Disu, has issued a firm directive to all police formations and operatives, warning against illegal detention, meddling in civil matters, and extortion.

Disu, in a police signal from the Ekiti State Police Command, obtained by SaharaReporters, also warned against shabby dressing, indiscipline, and uncivilised conduct.

According to police wireless message, the directive prohibits extortion, misconduct, and other unethical practices by officers, in line with orders credited to the Inspector-General of Police.

In the internal police wireless message dated April 11, 2026, and circulated across various formations in the state, the Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State Command, said the action followed directives from the Inspector-General of Police on the need to enforce discipline, professionalism, and restore public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force.

The message was sent to senior officers and tactical units including SCIID, MOPOL 33 PMF, State Intelligence Department (SID), X-Squad, Area Commands, Divisional Police Officers, and the Rapid Response Squad.

It warned officers against engaging in “soliciting, collecting or receiving money from motorists, commuters and conductors on highways and expressways,” as well as operating “illegal, unsanctioned and unsupervised checkpoints not authorised by the authority.”

The directive also prohibits officers from “luring or enticing members of the public to drive against traffic or commit infractions for the purpose of arrest or extortion,” and condemned “arresting innocent persons and conveying them to Automated Teller Machines to extract money from them by force or intimidation.”

Other banned practices include “performing illegal private duties,” “improper dressing and use of unapproved uniforms,” “wearing of beards,” and “harassment of members of the public in any form” by any officers or tactical teams within the command.

The Commissioner warned that any officer found violating the directives would face serious consequences and urged supervisors to ensure full compliance and proper briefing of personnel.

He further ordered intensified surveillance across the state and directed the X-Squad to arrest any officer found breaching the rules, stressing that the instruction must be treated as “very important” and implemented without delay.
