The Federal Government has performed the ground-breaking ceremony for the Ecumenical Airport Chapel and Pilgrims Centre at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

Speaking during the ceremony on April 25, 2026, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, described the project as a historic and spiritually significant initiative.

He said it reflects the intersection of faith, national development, and human well-being, emphasizing that it symbolizes a commitment to integrating spiritual reflection into modern infrastructure.

Akume noted that the facility will serve as a sanctuary for travelers, pilgrims, and the Christian faithful, providing a space for reflection and spiritual renewal amid the pressures of travel.

He added that the centre will function as a haven to uplift individuals, ease burdens, and strengthen faith.

Highlighting its relevance, he stated that the project comes at a time when increasing mobility and life pressures make spiritual support systems essential.

He explained that the centre is designed to promote unity, compassion, and shared humanity across the nation.

The SGF further linked the initiative to the Federal Government’s efforts to improve passenger experience and upgrade aviation infrastructure, stressing the need for airports to address not only physical transit but also emotional and spiritual needs.

He commended stakeholders involved in the project and expressed confidence that the centre would serve generations by offering comfort, strength, and inspiration to all who pass through it.
