IGP Disu warns officers risk dismissal, prosecution over misuse of firearms
Tunji Disu, the inspector-general of police (IGP), says any officer who violates Force Order 237 on the use of firearms would face dismissal and prosecution.
The IGP spoke in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital, on Thursday at the passing-out parade of 1,068 newly trained constables.
He noted that the police officer who killed a restrained suspect in Delta has been dismissed and will be prosecuted.
After the ceremony, the IGP held a meeting with officers of the Akwa Ibom police command.
Disu urged senior officers to mentor the young constables, adding that their conduct would reflect the standards and integrity of the force.
He said commissioners of police must take charge of the activities within their jurisdictions.
He added that commissioners of police will be held liable for the actions of officers under their commands.
He commended the commissioner of police in Akwa Ibom for his exemplary leadership, noting that the state is the first in the country to issue certificates to the newly trained constables.
The IGP also commended the Akwa Ibom state government for its sustained support to the force.
The constables were trained on how to handle firearms.
