Wike Loyalist Emerges as PDP Governorship Candidate in Rivers State

In a significant development ahead of the 2027 governorship election, Chief (Hon.) Dr. Sam Soni Ejekwu, PhD, KGS, a staunch loyalist of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate for Rivers State.

Ejekwu clinched the ticket after the party’s gubernatorial primaries held on Sunday, where he was declared the consensus and sole candidate. He reportedly polled overwhelmingly in the direct primary, particularly recording strong support in areas like Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, including Ward 18 (Obaziolu, Diobu).

Party stakeholders and supporters described his emergence as a reflection of his extensive public service record, deep grassroots connections, and unwavering commitment to the PDP. Ejekwu, a former commissioner and prominent political figure, is widely seen as a key ally within the Wike political structure.

Speaking after the primary exercise, Ejekwu expressed confidence in the strength of the PDP in Rivers State. He highlighted the massive turnout of supporters and the party’s readiness to secure victory in the upcoming elections. He also referenced the ongoing Rainbow Coalition in the state, noting its potential to shape political alignments moving forward.

The development comes amid intense political maneuvering in Rivers State, as various parties position themselves for the 2027 polls. While the PDP consolidates behind Ejekwu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has named Kingsley Chinda as its governorship candidate.
