Governor Restricts Okada Operations, Bans Night Movement Across State

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has announced a statewide restriction on the operations of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as Okada, between 10:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m.

The directive, which takes immediate effect, prohibits commercial motorcycle operators from carrying out transportation services during the specified hours across all parts of the state.

The move is part of the state government’s efforts to strengthen security, curb criminal activities, and improve public safety. Security agencies have often linked the use of motorcycles to incidents of armed robbery, kidnapping, and other crimes, particularly during late-night hours.

Under the new regulation, Okada riders found operating within the restricted period risk arrest and possible sanctions in line with existing laws and government directives.

Residents have been advised to make alternative transportation arrangements during the affected hours, while security agencies have been directed to ensure strict enforcement of the restriction.

The announcement has generated mixed reactions among residents and commercial motorcycle operators. While some citizens have welcomed the measure as a necessary step to improve security, others have expressed concerns about its impact on commuters and riders who depend on nighttime transportation for their livelihoods.

Government officials, however, maintain that the decision is aimed at protecting lives and property and creating a safer environment for all residents of Oyo State.
