Couple Sentenced to 40 Years Each for $30 Million COVID-19 Pyramid Scheme

A Texas couple, Marlon “DJ ASAP” Moore and his wife, LaShonda Moore, have each been sentenced to 40 years in federal prison after being convicted of operating a massive pyramid scheme that allegedly defrauded thousands of people during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to U.S. authorities, the couple orchestrated a fraudulent investment operation that generated more than $30 million by promising victims unrealistic financial returns.

Federal prosecutors said the scheme targeted over 10,000 victims across the United States, many of whom invested their savings believing they were participating in a legitimate wealth-building opportunity. Investigators found that instead of generating profits through real investments, the operation relied on funds from new participants to pay earlier investors, a hallmark of a pyramid scheme. The Department of Justice said the fraud caused devastating financial losses to individuals and families nationwide.

The lengthy prison sentences reflect the scale of the fraud and the significant harm inflicted on victims. U.S. officials described the case as one of the largest pandemic-era financial scams prosecuted in recent years, stressing that those who exploit public trust during times of crisis will face severe legal consequences. The case serves as a reminder for investors to thoroughly verify investment opportunities and remain cautious of schemes that promise unusually high or guaranteed returns.
