2027 Bombshell: Ohanaeze Tells Peter Obi to Step Down for Tinubu

The apex Igbo socio-cultural body, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has called on former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, to reconsider his reported 2027 presidential ambition and instead support incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In a strongly worded press statement issued on Tuesday, the group warned that Obi’s participation in the 2027 race could undermine the political and economic interests of the Igbo people if it leads to defeat at the polls.

Ohanaeze argued that Obi’s move to the National Democratic Congress lacks the structural strength required to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress, which it described as “politically formidable.”

The organisation further noted that divisions within the opposition could weaken its chances of mounting a credible challenge. It pointed to the likelihood of a split vote between Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who is widely expected to contest under the African Democratic Congress platform.

Concerns Over Igbo Interests

According to the statement, a failed presidential bid could have far-reaching consequences for the Southeast, including uncertainty around Igbo-owned investments in major commercial hubs like Lagos and Abuja, and potential setbacks in political representation.

Ohanaeze also warned that key aspirations such as the creation of an additional southeastern state and sustained federal infrastructure development in the region could face delays if political influence is weakened at the national level.

The group added that future opportunities for higher political offices, including the prospects of producing a vice president in 2031 or a president in 2035, might be jeopardized if strategic alliances are not carefully managed.

Describing its appeal as urgent, Ohanaeze urged Obi to “prioritise collective interests over personal ambition” by stepping down from the race and aligning with President Tinubu.
