Nigerian Governor Set To Resign, See Why

Imo politics is quietly shifting again, and this time it is the governor himself at the center of the move.

Hope Uzodimma has confirmed he will be seeking to return to the National Assembly in 2027, this time targeting the Imo West Senatorial District seat.

He made the disclosure on Sunday through his X account, describing the decision as a response to renewed calls from his constituents who want him back in the Senate.

According to him, he has already taken the first formal steps by submitting himself for screening under the All Progressives Congress ahead of the party primaries.

He also emphasized that the ambition is not personal in nature, but one that must pass through the party structure, stressing loyalty to the APC and its broader political direction.

If successful, this would mark a return to familiar ground. Uzodimma previously served as senator for Imo West from 2011 to 2019 before eventually becoming governor of the state in 2020 following a Supreme Court ruling that altered the outcome of the 2019 governorship election.

Now, while still in his second term as governor, he is positioning himself for another political transition, even though his tenure is expected to run until early 2028, beyond the inauguration of the next Senate in mid 2027.

The move immediately places him in a crowded contest within his party.

Former governor Rochas Okorocha and current senator Osita Izunaso are also in the race for the same APC ticket, setting up a high stakes internal battle involving three heavyweight political figures from the same district.

Over the past months, speculation had already been building that Uzodimma might leave the governorship early to pursue a Senate ambition, with some reports even suggesting possible behind the scenes succession arrangements in the state government.

Those claims were later dismissed by his office, which insisted he remains fully engaged as governor.
