Professor Ndibe arrested in Nigeria

Renown academic, Prof Okey Ndibe, has reportedly been arrested by the State Security Services, SSS, Nigeria’s secret police

According to a social media post made Monday evening by Uzor Maxim Uzoatu, a literary critic and essayist, Prof. Ndub, a distinguished novelist, academic and public intellectual, arrived Nigeria Monday morning from his base in the United States of America, and was immediately taken into custody by the SSS which had yet to issue any public statement on the arrest and possible reason.

As at the time of Uzoatu’s disclosure, officials of the SSS insisted that they were waiting for “orders from above” before he could be released.

Prof. Ndibe is reported to have “time-bound duties he planned to accomplish in Nigeria which are being impeded by this unwarranted detention.”

It was reported that this sort of harassment of the scholar by the security officers had been a routine after which they would to apologise later “after much harm had been done.”

Uzoatu noted that it “is crucial to note that Prof Ndibe has not written any journalism lately to make for this maltreatment and the recourse to higher officials of the SSS for his clearance.”

In recent times, Nigerians have been facing more harassment by state security agencies.
