Nigerian Senate Moves to Establish State Police, Pledges Legislative Support for Security Reforms

The Nigerian Senate has commenced efforts toward the establishment of state police as part of broader measures aimed at strengthening the nation’s security architecture and addressing the growing security challenges across the country.

This development was disclosed by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, during an exclusive interview with The PUNCH. According to him, the Senate remains committed to supporting critical reforms that will enhance security and improve the safety of lives and property nationwide.
Adaramodu stated that lawmakers recognize the urgent need to review and strengthen existing security structures in response to persistent threats such as banditry, kidnapping, terrorism, communal clashes, and other forms of criminality affecting various parts of the country.

He explained that the Senate is prepared to provide all necessary legislative backing to ensure the successful implementation of policies and constitutional amendments required for the creation of state police.
The proposal for state policing has been a subject of national debate for several years, with proponents arguing that decentralizing policing powers would improve intelligence gathering, enhance community policing, and enable faster responses to security threats at the grassroots level.
