Top Governorship candidate to stepdown, reason revealed

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) gubernatorial candidate for Adamawa state, Omar Suleiman is reportedly considering stepping down to necessitate the emergence of another candidate through a consensus.

Omar Suleiman, a former managing director of the Nigeria’s Port Authority (NPA), emerged the winner of the ADC gubernatorial primary in Adamawa state, defeating his closest rival, Hamman Tukur Modibbo.

Omar Suleiman, a known long-standing ally of Babachir Lawal according to sources within the ADC in Adamawa, has become disinterested in flying the party’s governorship ticket in 2027 due to the growing disunity in the party as well as lack of formidable politicians capable of galvanizing support for his candidacy.

The governorship candidate is said to believe that he has been isolated following the resignation of Babachir Lawal from the party as well as the party’s inability to field formidable candidates for the senatorial districts in the state as well as for the house of representatives.

Sources within the party suggest that the governorship candidate may resign from the party to align with Babachir Lawal. Insiders claim that even though he still enjoys the support of former vice president Atiku Abubakar, he has failed to win over the support of other strong members of the party including members of the party’s leadership.

With the growing disunity in the party, lack of commitment from the leadership of the party in his candidacy and the resignation of Babachir Lawal from the party, Omar Suleiman is said to be skeptical about his future in the party.
