Senate Reveals Safeguards To Stop Governors From Misusing State Police

ABUJA (FCT) – The Senate has explained how the proposed State Police system will be protected from political abuse after passing the constitutional amendment bill seeking to establish state-controlled police services across Nigeria. According to Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, the bill includes strict safeguards to prevent governors from using state police for partisan, ethnic, religious or personal interests and provides for federal intervention in cases of serious rights violations or a breakdown of public order.

Lawmakers also included provisions barring state police from targeting individuals, political parties or groups simply for criticising the government. The Senate said any federal intervention would require written approval from the President, be subject to Senate oversight and remain open to judicial review. The proposed legislation still requires approval from the House of Representatives, presidential assent and endorsement by a majority of state Houses of Assembly before it can become law.
