Minister of Livestock Development Idi Mukhtar Maiha Visits Kano: Advancing Transformation Through Innovation, Value Addition & Prosperity

Under the leadership of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and guidance of the Honourable Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, FNIM, the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development is implementing bold and practical reforms. These reforms are designed to unlock the enormous potential of Nigeria’s livestock sector and reposition it as a cornerstone of national prosperity. The Minister’s working visit to Kano State on 3rd July 2026, provides a timely opportunity to deepen this transformation agenda, with HMI-4-GGLD as part of stakeholders

In close partnership with the Kano State Government under the leadership of His Excellency, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, FNSE, these federal initiatives are finding fertile ground. Kano’s strong infrastructure, established livestock markets, and culture of enterprise are laying the foundation for sustainable livestock production, improved food security, large-scale employment generation, industrial growth, and long-term economic prosperity. The state’s strategic location also makes it a natural gateway for livestock trade across Northern Nigeria and beyond.

As a committed stakeholder in this national transformation, Hope for Mutual Intervention – Honourable Mukhtar Idi Maiha for Good Governance and Livestock Development, HMI-4-GGLD, under the leadership of its Founder and National Coordinator, Hon. Lawan Sadiq Abubakar (Sarkin Yakin Matasan Jimeta), continues to mobilize support for policies and programmes that deliver real results. HMI-4-GGLD is focused on promoting value addition, modern livestock management practices, feedlot development, hygienic meat processing, and seamless market integration from farm to consumer across the country.

The livestock sector remains one of Nigeria’s most valuable but underdeveloped economic assets. Through deliberate and strategic investments in modern Feedlot Estates, upgraded abattoirs, well-organized livestock markets, reliable veterinary services, and efficient processing facilities, Kano State is steadily emerging as a leading centre for livestock production and red meat value addition. This model is already showing how science, enterprise, and tradition can work together to create wealth at the grassroots.

Central to this transformation are key initiatives such as the Sheep and Goats Feedlot Estate, which has the capacity to fatten 800 animals per hectare through improved feeding systems, better animal health management, and scientifically monitored growth cycles. This approach significantly boosts productivity, reduces losses, and increases profitability for small and large farmers alike. In the same vein, the Bulls Feedlot Estate is designed to accommodate 330 bulls per hectare using modern fattening systems. These systems improve meat quality, shorten production cycles, and raise the market value of livestock, giving Nigerian meat products a competitive edge.

What makes Kano’s approach powerful is the adoption of a complete value chain model that connects every stage of production. The process flows from Open Livestock Market to Feedlot, then to Modern Abattoir, and finally to Market. This integrated system ensures reduced animal losses, increased value addition at each stage, and better food safety standards for consumers. More importantly, it creates jobs for youth and women, generates wealth for rural communities, and delivers higher returns for livestock farmers and investors who are willing to embrace modern methods.

Beyond economics, livestock is proving to be much more than cattle and pasture. It is business, it is science, it is food security, and it is climate-smart agriculture when managed responsibly. It is also a powerful tool for youth employment and women’s enterprise, giving millions of Nigerians a dignified path out of poverty. In communities where conflict over resources has existed, modern livestock management is emerging as peace infrastructure by reducing pressure on land and water while promoting shared prosperity for farmers and pastoralists.

This vision is only possible through shared commitment. Together, the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, the Kano State Government, private sector participants, development partners, and stakeholders such as HMI-4-GGLD are aligning efforts towards a livestock sector that is productive, profitable, resilient, and globally competitive. This collective drive reflects the Renewed Hope Agenda of His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and confirms that with the right leadership and partnership, Nigeria’s livestock sector can become a major pillar of national development.
